A few months ago when the cover of Magic Slays was revealed, Susi and I couldn’t help but notice a few disturbing things. Since we’re not known to be silent about our qualms, we ended up making a post about ‘everything wrong about this cover’ over at Book Lovers Inc (you can see the post here). lol
Now Magic Slays has been released and something struck us when we saw the cover...
To emphasize our point, we’ll show you the cover we posted a few months ago next to the new one.
So...did you see it?
Susi: I can NOT NOT stare it. LOL It screams to me now that I saw it LOL.
Caro: Yes ladies and well ...ladies (let’s be honest here!)... Kate finally got a boobjob! Look more closely at #3
Susi: A backward boobjob after the offending one we complained about LOL
Caro: You know, I’m very happy about this change. I’d like to think our collective venting (coz we weren’t the only one having a problem with her big boobs) was heard. ;)
Susi: Yeah it could be or Ilona was as offended as we were LOL. But we have to say great job Ace- another reason to love you.
Did you noticed it too? What do you think?
Do you think bloggers' opinions can play a part in making publishers alter a cover?
Could we hope Orbit would finally see reason and change the new Gail Carriger covers too? ;)

First of all I am really outraged that authors have very little or nothing to say when it comes to the cover of their own books. That's ridiculous because really few publishers make good choices all the time so why not consult the author? After all sometimes a good cover can attract potential buyers as efficiently as bad cover can put them off. It is a very fine example. The boobs in the first cover are definitely overlarge for such a sporty, kick-ass heroine who lives off her katana sword. Have you ever wonder, dear publisher, why none of female fencers or athletes have large breasts?
Also Kate's face has that look as if she was a saint soon to be sacrificed by ugly heathens on an altar of their equally ugly god. She looks upwards and asks: why me? What have I done? Is it really my turn? You know, father in heavens, I do hate you right now... Not exactly a good example of her attitude, right? And of course, obviously, it is not the same Kate as on other covers. Sigh...
I really do not have much to say other than yay smaller boobs and less of a manicure :) The boobs I could have lived it, I mean she could been preggers ;) But the nails, no way
Lol, thank you for your influence on altering the cover of this book. I agree, it is much better this way. But the sword is still in her left hand, and she is right handed ...
@anachronist I totally agree and LOL about the sacrifice. Snort, so not Kate.
@Blodeuedd The nails are still too much on it though. :/
@Aurian I hope we did but prolly not. Yes, it seems cover artist aren't that much for the detail.
@Anachronist Indeed, Kate looks almost vulnerable. Not the fierce looking Kate we had on the previous covers. That one rocked!
@Blodeuedd The nails are less in the light in the print version but she still has a French Manicure on O_O
@Aurian Maybe she's Ambidextrous ;)
You two have super magical powers! Getting covers tweaked, that's a good one!
@Julia It sure is funnier to think we're the reason it was changed ;) I think I like that super magical power *g*
Now I must concentrate real hard on a few ugly covers I saw *tries to make her magic works*
@Julia We practice that a lot. Sadly it doesn't work as often as we hope. ;)
Hmm, I don't think I would have noticed if you hadn't said anything. That is an aweful book reader I am. ;) But I see them now that you pointed it out. I do wish authors had more imput in the covers. They know their characters and scenes best. Thanks!
@Melissa I think it is better to not be that influenced by the cover. I'm sure that I missed out on some great reads just cuz I don't buy the ugly ones- just when I'm really really urged to do that by rec's.
